What mattress is better than Saatva?
Established in 2010, Saatva specializes in direct-to-consumer luxury mattresses under 3 brand names: Saatva, Loom & Leaf, and Zenhaven. Pocketed coils provide the Saatva Classic a great amount of bounce near the top, and a plush top adds softness. As with all of the Saatva Company’s mattresses, the Saatva Classic is delivered by movers, rather than in a box.

Note: Saatva just recently updated the Zenhaven, changing the kind of latex used in its foam layers. The Zenhaven now includes Dunlop latex, instead of Talalay latex; read more about the differences below. We plan to evaluate the new variation soon and will upgrade this guide with our impressions.
The all-foam Zenhaven consists mostly of latex, which is inherently durable. The Zenhaven is also flippable (the Luxury Plush side feels medium-firm, while the Mild Company side feels a bit firmer), which may prove handy if you’re unsure what you prefer or if your needs change over time. This is not a traditionally soft bed mattress, however it uses a flexible cushion, great edge support, and a subtle springiness. Given its innate sturdiness, the Zenhaven needs to work well for people who weigh more than 200 pounds.

These bed mattress were likewise examined in our group tests carried out for Wirecutter’s guides to the best foam mattresses and the best innerspring bed mattress. As Wirecutter’s senior staff writer for sleep, I’ve talked to scores of experts in the mattress market and in materials science; gone to dozens of mattress factories, display rooms, and stores; and pored over the fine print on specs, service warranties, and return policies. Most recently, supervising editor Courtney Schley examined the Saatva Latex Hybrid in her house for numerous weeks.

We haven’t yet done a deep dive into the “natural” claims of Saatva or of other “environment-friendly” brands. We do understand that the business uses thistle pulp or organic wool as a flame retardant (as opposed to fiberglass or chemicals) and only natural cotton (instead of artificial blends) in its covers. As do other online bed mattress companies, Saatva promotes such additionals as zoned layers for “optimum spine assistance”; we’re less satisfied with those features and more appreciative of Saatva’s responsive client service and resilient foams and coils.
